3 Ways to Beat the Holiday Stress of a Home Mess

Fall has always been one of my favorite times of year. The combination of cooler weather, pumpkins and fall décor, and friends and family gathered together for the holidays fills our entire household with joy.

However, fall also means spending more time indoors and more time hosting loved ones. Both of those things can make us acutely aware of messes and clutter in our home.

Fortunately, a few intentional changes can help transform your home from a state of chaos, to a state of clean!

1. Focus on necessities. Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on what we are truly thankful for, and we can carry this same attitude into cleaning out our homes! When you look at your belongings, I challenge you to ask yourself two questions: (1) Is this something I cherish? Or, (2) Is this something I use daily? Use this framework to help you purge unnecessary clutter from your home! Less clutter = less to clean.

2. Maximize the storage in your home. Be intentional with those items you don’t use on a regular basis but still need to keep. Having items properly organized and stored makes cleaning so much easier… and it means those items are easier to find when you need them! If you’re lacking in closet space, get creative: an ottoman with hidden storage for blankets and throw pillows, wicker baskets for shoes by the door, and under-the-bed storage bins for your summer clothes, are just a few suggestions! Don’t forget to label when possible so items are easier to find.

3. Whenever possible, maximize design choices that make high traffic areas easier to clean. Be intentional with your paint colors, flooring, and fabric choices. For example, matte paint, while trendy, tends to show more fingerprints and smudges than semi-gloss paint. For furniture, opt for leather or faux leather, or fabrics that are stain resistant.

4. Identify the pain points in your home and come up with a game plan. When you think about cleaning your home, which area is the most overwhelming to you? For me, it’s the kitchen! No matter how much I clean, there always seems to be a mess leftover in the kitchen. Because of that, we have a “house rule” that we try not to go to bed with dirty dishes in the sink. While it can be a pain at times, it’s a small way for my family to keep our most-used space feeling clean.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed and don’t know where to start, we are here for you. Whether you need a hand with deep cleaning, decluttering, or putting up your seasonal home décor, our team can help every nook and cranny of your home feel orderly and intentional.

I hope these tips and embracing order in your home will bring you extra peace and joy this holiday season!
