Rolling into October, the Harvest Moon has come and gone which means the time to harvest is here. The growing season is coming to an end… or is it?  While it may be too lofty an idea to establish that greenhouse you’ve dreamt about, there is one affordable way to keep some of your select cold weather crops, such as your leafy green, growing into the fall and winter season.

I first saw this idea mentioned by the farmers at Roots and Refuge Farm.  An affordable Greenhouse perfect for any yard or apartment balcony that has full sun.  A project that can be enjoyed in solitude or with the kids in your life!

All you need is (preferably) a 90QT clear plastic tub.  You may have one already lying around the house!  I had to settle for one that is closer to a 60QT but I made it work!  I bought two different sized potting soil bags and decided to use the one that was 28L to better fit the smaller tub size.

When I am done prepping the soil I can now add seeds and lightly water with a watering can.  This time I decided to transfer Big Boston Lettuce I started a few weeks ago.  Now add your tub on top for the greenhouse effect!  If you feel like your plants need more air on a hot day you can prop one side open.  I plan to keep my lid in place and can’t wait to start more of these affordable greenhouse containers!
